With Christ, We are Braver, Stronger, and Smarter
From Pastor Quentin Wallace
For God did not give us a spirit of fear, but has given us a spirit of power, and of love and sound judgment. — 2 Timothy 1:7
“You’re braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” A.A. Milne (author of Winnie the Pooh)
After 15 seasons, the fantasy-horror TV series Supernatural concluded in 2021. Over those years, viewers watched fictional brothers Sam and Dean Winchester fight all types of supernatural beings. It seemed as if they never tired and never feared anything, including death. Following their late father’s (John Winchester) mission to rid the world of monsters was their only goal.
Trying to complete their task, they made mistakes, disagreed with one another, or were tricked by evil beings. However, that didn’t deter them or steer them away from their objective. Sadly, by the end of the series, they had not eliminated the world’s monsters.
Although the Supernatural TV series was fictional and, in real life, we’ll never rid the world of all the ills of society, that should never deter us from doing what we can try. In the Bible, we hear stories of disciples who faithfully attempted to improve the world by sharing the gospel amid significant opposition. How did they keep going as they followed their inherited mission from Christ? They leaned on the promises of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit.
While Milne’s quote is inspiring, it could give the impression that one is able to be all one can be in one’s own strength. We, as people of faith, understand that God never meant for us to go it alone but to depend on God in all things.
In the scriptural passage above, the Apostle Paul inspires Timothy, a young preacher, by stating that God gives Christ followers courage, strength, and wisdom.
Courage: God does not give us a spirit of fear, so we will have the unfettered courage to spread the gospel with Christ.Strength: God’s power allows us to be stronger through the Holy Spirit; it strengthens us when we’re weak.
Wisdom: Although the secular world may disagree, we, as people of faith, are smarter than we think because we trust in a God we can’t see but know is there because He gives us compassion, discernment, and wisdom.
Therefore, let us assuredly move forward in faithful ministry, knowing that we are braver, stronger, and smarter. Because, though we are imperfect, we have a perfect God guiding us.
Blessings,
Pastor Quentin
